Understanding Your Construction Contract: What Clients Should Know

23 Sept, 2026

Most disputes on construction projects trace back to ambiguity in the contract, or to parties not fully understanding what they agreed to. Before signing, clients should be clear on how variations will be valued and approved, how and when interim payments will be certified, what the process is for extensions of time, how the final account will be settled, and what happens if the contractor or client wants to terminate.

A quantity surveyor administering the contract on the client's behalf helps keep these processes fair, well documented and consistently applied — reducing the risk of disputes and protecting the client's position throughout the project.
