Sustainable Construction: Balancing Green Ambitions With Budget
23 Sept, 2026
Sustainable and green building features are increasingly expected on new developments, but they carry cost implications that are best assessed early — and holistically, considering whole-life cost rather than construction cost alone. A feature with a higher upfront cost may deliver lower operating and maintenance costs over the life of the building, changing the economics of the decision entirely.
Involving a quantity surveyor early in decisions around sustainable design allows clients to make informed trade-offs between capital cost, operating cost and their sustainability objectives, rather than treating green features as an afterthought to be value-engineered out under budget pressure.
